What is sight translation?
I received a lot of feedback from the language and interpreting community after I posted my first blog last month. Here is a question I received regarding sight translation that I wanted to clarify: Question: "So what is sight translation? In last month's blog, I thought you said translation was the written word and interpretation was the spoken word." Answer: Yes....BUT sight translation is an oral interpretation of a document that an interpreter has reviewed, then verbally interprets the contents from one language to another to the client or before a judge or in other medical or social settings. INTERPRETER OR TRANSLATOR? Even the most informed people will accidentally interchange these two terms. It's totally understandable and an easy mistake. A lot of people make this mistake because the phenomenon they are trying to describe IS a translation of one language to another. That is true. However... HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE: An interpreter INTERPRETS the spoken word & A translator TRANSLATES the written word. Some interpreters are also translators and vice versa....but not that's not always the case. |
